Attendance Policies

Your child’s attendance is critical to his/her academic success. Please make every effort to have your child attend school every day. Tardies and absences lead to loss of instructional time as well as revenue for the school, and should be avoided whenever possible.

Absences

If your child is unable to attend school for any reason, please call the office and notify the school of the reason for your child’s absence. If you have not already notified the main office, you must send a note of explanation to your child's teacher on the day your child returns to school.

If your child is absent for more than 4 days due to illness, a doctor's note is required at the time of your child's return to school. LAUSD policy requires that all student absences be accounted for.

Tardies

To assist children in reporting to class on time, we have two bells that ring each morning, one at 8:10 a.m. for lining up and a second bell at 8:15 a.m. when instruction begins. If your child is late, you and your child will need to enter through the school’s front entrance and go to the office to obtain a late slip. Please note that three unexcused tardies over 30 minutes, are equivalent to one truancy.

If your child is late due to a medical, dental or court appointment, this will be considered an excused tardy.  However, please make every effort to schedule your child’s medical, dental and other appointments outside of regular school hours so that your child will receive maximum instruction time.

Independent Study Program

In certain circumstances, students can enroll in the Independent Study Program and receive attendance credit while being away from school for more than 3 days. The criteria for receiving attendance credit in the Independent Study Program are the following:

  1. Parent must notify the teacher and the main office in advance.
  2. Parent must sign the Independent Study Program Contract in advance in the main office.
  3. Parent must pick up work assignment from the classroom teacher in advance.
  4. Parent must ensure that the student completes the assignment during the time away from school.
  5. Upon the student's return, teacher must deem that the assignment was completed in a satisfactory manner in order for the student to receive attendance credit.

Please note that if students return to school without completing their assignments, the student’s absence will be considered unexcused (three days of unexcused absences are considered truancy) and the school will lose funding for every day the student was absent. Furthermore, unexcused absences could cause Broadway to fail the Superintendent’s attendance goal. When a parent enrolls his/her child in the Independent Study Program, it is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that the child completes his or her assignment each day.

Early Release of Students

Please make every effort to schedule your child’s medical, dental and other appointments outside of regular school hours. When you must take your child out of school for an appointment or any other reason, please come to the office to sign for your child. For the safety of our students, LAUSD policy requires that we ask for identification of the adult picking up a child prior to releasing the child during school hours. If anyone other than the parent is picking up the child, his/her name MUST be on the emergency card with release authorization.

District Notification Phone Calls and Emails

LAUSD makes daily, automated telephone calls and emails to the parent or guardian of all children who are tardy or absent. These calls and emails are automatically generated by the District based upon daily attendance records and do not come from our school office. Therefore, please expect to receive a call and/or email even if you have already notified us of the reason for your child’s late arrival or absence or even if you have enrolled in the Independent Study Program.
